The brief

For the second issue of KSB's 2024 quarterly magazine, I was commissioned to lead an illustration concept highlighting the hospital's new building, scheduled for completion in 2025. The editorial team crafted fictional patient stories to explore the hospital's future capabilities.

None of it had happened yet, so there was nothing to photograph. I developed a visual storytelling approach using AI-generated imagery via Midjourney, then directed and finished it.

The hard part

The challenge was to establish a consistent illustration style that aligned with the magazine's tone while visually supporting the themes of each individual article.

Through extensive experimentation and creative direction, I developed a cohesive visual language: flat colour, warm and limited, with faces drawn plainly enough to carry stories about illness without dramatising them.

How it landed

The client was extremely pleased with the outcome, and the magazine issue received above-average positive feedback from its readership, marking this AI-illustration pilot as a successful editorial experiment.

The tool produced the imagery. Deciding what the issue should look like, and what to discard, was the work.

KSB N°2 2024, all 36 pages. The publication is the hospital's; my contribution to this issue is the illustration.
